DECEMBER 2017 ARTISTS OF THE MONTH

This month we celebrate Kenneth Hopkins and the New England Ballet Company as part of our Artist of the Month Series.

KENNETH HOPKINS
NEW ENGLAND BALLET COMPANY

When we first featured Kenneth Hopkins and the New England Ballet (NEBCO) company in 2015, they had just moved to their downtown Bridgeport location at 130 Elm Street. Since then, the New England Ballet Company has grown as a presence in the City of Bridgeport as well as Fairfield County.

For our December Artist of the Month feature we revisited the NEBC to highlight their iconic Nutcracker live performance this holiday season.

About New England Ballet Company
NEBCO current goals are continuing the growth & increase in dance students for our downtown Bridgeport studio located at 130 Elm Street. Also the continuance of area outreach dance programming. Such as our ballet program at Curiele School & the Adaptive Nutcracker

How do you think you’ve changed/grown as an artist?
Artistically a long time dream was achieved with the collaboration of Peter & the Wolf between New England Ballet Company & the Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestra performed at the University of Bridgeport.

What can attendees expect from the Nutcracker performance?
Nutcracker is a Holiday Tradition that for many kicks off their season of celebrating.  New England Ballet Company’s production is one that follows the classical traditions of the ballet while incorporating the rich color pallet often associated with the Christmas Holidays!

What news or projects are you excited for coming up?

New England Ballet Company presents Tchaikovsky’s holiday favorite, The Nutcracker. The composer, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, premiered his work 126 years ago during the holiday season, beginning a family tradition that has continued through the generations.

The ballet tells the story of a Christmas party, the gift of a nutcracker doll to Clara from her toymaker godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, and the young Clara’s dreams, all set to the beautiful melodies of the now famous score. The moment the lights dim, the audience is transported to a magic place filled with adorable children, marching toy soldiers, a villainous Rat King and mischievous mice. Enter the Land of Sweets through a dreamy on-stage snowstorm led by the elegant Snow Queen and Prince, with little angels to light the way.

Choreographer and Artistic Director Victor Trevino creates a Nutcracker for New England Ballet Company that is a magical holiday gift perfect for all ages!
